Waking up in a mysterious forest, surrounded by majestic trees with no sign of human presence, fills me with fear and anxiety. However, being accompanied by a suitable companion can transform this unexpected scenario into an exciting adventure. Although there are fictional characters with extraordinary superpowers to choose from, I assume that Princess Merida from the movie “Brave” is an ideal partner for such a precarious situation for many reasons. Regarding her background, Merida is a princess of the Scottish kingdom of Dunbroch in the movie “Brave.” Unlike any traditional princess, she does not follow societal expectations, values freedom, and becomes independent at an early age. I choose Merida to accompany me for several reasons. First and foremost, as seen in Brave, Merida leaves a strong impression with her mastery of archery, which saves her family from a bear. Therefore, she can use this outstanding ability to hunt for food and protect us from potential threats such as wild animals. Moreover, her prolonged exposure to the wilderness has trained Merida with many practical skills, including identifying edible plants, finding a water source, and even building shelter, thus helping to avoid starvation and thirst. On the other hand, Merida’s personality is also a factor that makes me feel assured when being with her. In “Brave,” she has a determination to navigate through magical forests as she needs to break the curse for her family; it not only showcases her bravery but also her ability to stay strong when she is both mentally and physically under immense pressure. She always tries her best, regardless of how perilous the circumstances are, thus giving us a moment of hope and confidence that we can deal with these challenges. To conclude, instead of accepting fate and falling into despair, having Merida by my side, along with her life skills, would greatly increase our chances of survival when stranded in an unfamiliar environment—just as she once said, “There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own. But I know better. Our fate lives within us. You only have to be brave enough to see it.”
